even though i was in vegas for work, we did have some time to eat and play…and eat some more. i’ve been to vegas a few times now and i feel like i have a pretty good grasp on some of the best food spots and places to stay. i also like the word free, so there are some fun things to do if you don’t want to pay an arm and a leg for a show.
WHERE TO STAY
the linq – we stayed here this time around and i have to say it was one of my favorite rooms! it was recently remodeled and the rooms are complete with modern touches and bold colors. there is a new shopping district right out the door and the ferris wheel to the left!
mgm grand – the hotel rooms are average, but you know what’s absolutely the best part? the freaking lazy river!! can’t you picture yourself floating all day with a pina colada in each hand? i hope so because that is exactly what i did. just make sure to wear lots of sunscreen!
the venetian – okay okay. i never actually stayed here, but it’s one of the most beautiful hotels i’ve ever seen! it also has some impressive shops and restaurants right at your doorstep! it’s pricey, but in life sometimes you just need to splurge once in awhile.
WHAT TO EAT
china poblano – located in the cosmopolitan, this little gem is a blend between chinese and mexican cuisine. i highly recommend when pigs fly and the chicken wings! lots of flavor and a cool vibe.
bazaar meat – this place scared me at first, but it ended up being the most interesting dining experience. keep in mind i’m not really a “meat” person, but i had everything from cotton candy foie gras to beef tartare, ha! if you like cocktails, then i’d say you better order the one with cotton candy because it was gooood! i might be biased because i love the stuff, so…
kumi – i loved this sushi place! the calamari was freaking delicious and get this…they have a roll with pop rocks. pop. rocks. it was weird how eating a piece of raw fish and rice was intensified by little popping candies. this was in mandalay bay, another great hotel!
WHAT TO DO
high roller ferris wheel – this wheel is literally the world’s largest and the views are jaw dropping. you see all of vegas and then nothing, no lights and black sky. it’s so beautiful. to enhance the experience, you can always splurge for the cabin with an open bar. the bartender was fast and helpful, and the second you finished a drink he was back asking what else you’d like. for a 30 minute ride, i can say i got my money’s worth…and then some. 😉
beatles love – this will forever be my favorite cirque du soleil show. i’ve seen a few including michael jackson’s one and zarkana, but i love the beatles so much and this made me have so many feels. when you book a hotel, see if they offer complimentary show tickets! there are always deals to be had no matter what show you see.
madame tussaud’s – i love a good wax museum, they’re so fascinating to me. this one is so fun because you can touch them, pose with them, and generally make a fool of yourself with them. either way it’s really fun.
WHAT TO DO (FOR FREE!)
bellagio fountains – this is kind of a no brainer, considering it goes off like every 30 minutes. i like watching it at night when it lights up, so hang around if you can! the bellagio is also home to an elaborate arrangement of plants and flowers in its bright, airy atrium.
the mirage volcano – in front of the mirage, is a beautifully landscaped scene with waterfalls and…a volcano! this guy erupts at night to an intense drumbeat with fire and explosions and water!
strolling through the venetian – this hotel is gorgeous…and also some crazy labyrinth that you can’t seem to find your way out of. the ceilings are painted to look like the sky and a canal weaves through the hotel, gondolas with singing men can be seen around every corner. there are also some great restaurants scattered throughout.
i really enjoy las vegas because it’s so cheap and a great way to relax. the desert also has some great places off the strip, like red rock, which i visited for the first time. i would love to hear if anyone else has some suggestions! i’ll be back again for work in january, so let me know!
